Proximity fob systems for offices, workshops and communal entrances. The point of a fob system is that when one goes missing you delete it — rather than changing the lock and reissuing keys to thirty people.
Controls, intercoms, safety edges and free-exit loops on vehicle gates. Powered gates carry real safety obligations under the machinery rules and they're treated accordingly rather than as a big lock.
Panels that buzz but never release, handsets with no audio, locks that hold on a dead supply, readers that work in summer and not in winter. Most of these are supply or termination faults rather than the equipment.
Why the cabling matters
An entry panel is a low-voltage device holding a lock against a spring, in the weather, all day, for years. Almost every fault we're called to is a supply that has sagged, a termination that has corroded, or a lock drawing more current than the cable was ever going to carry.
That's why the same person who fits the panel does the wiring — and why "it worked for a fortnight then went funny" is a sentence we hear about other people's installations rather than our own.
Worth knowing
Fire doors and escape routes. Any electrically-held door on an escape route has to release when the fire alarm goes off, and has to be openable from the inside without a fob, a code or a key. This is not optional and it is not a detail — it's checked on any job we do, and if an existing installation gets it wrong we will tell you in writing.
Rented and leasehold property. Fixing anything to a communal door or the outside of a building usually needs the freeholder's or managing agent's permission. Worth an email before we come out, and it takes ten minutes.
